Music
" When words fail, music speaks."
- Hans Christian Anderson

Curriculum Intent
Children at our school are provided with a music curriculum which aims to engage and inspire them and to develop their love and appreciation of music.
We deliver a curriculum which increases their self-confidence, develops resilience and encourages collaboration.
We encourage children to enjoy singing, composing and performing within a range of enjoyable learning experiences including to audiences within both school and the local community.
All children are actively encouraged and given the opportunity to learn to play a musical instrument.
Ultimately, we endeavour to ignite a passion and enthusiasm for music where children can express their individuality and experience a great sense of achievement.
Curriculum Implementation
Our Year R and KS1 music curriculum follows the Hampshire Music Service scheme, which is an integrated, practical, exploratory and child-led approach to musical learning. All musical learning in this scheme is built around the interrelated dimensions of music: pulse, rhythm, pitch, tempo, dynamics, timbre, texture, structure and notation.
Each unit of work consists of the strands of musical learning which correspond with the national curriculum for music and are organised by:
1. Listening and Appraising
2. Musical Activities
- Warm up games
- Singing
- Playing instruments
- Improvisation
- Composition
- Performing
The HMS scheme enables children to understand musical concepts through musical games, singing and playing instruments all in a fun way. Learning about musical concepts through different musical activities enables a more secure, deeper learning and mastery of musical skills. Children receive half-termly units of teaching. The units are delivered as stand alone units. In the second half of the Autumn term all year groups prepare for a Christmas show in their music lessons.
In addition to weekly music lessons, children in KS1 receive the opportunity to learn the Ukuele (Year 1) or African drumming (Year 2) for a half term through Hampshire Music Services Listen2Me lessons. We also have weekly singing assemblies and regular opportunities for singing practise through the week.
Curriculum Impact
The impact of the Music curriculum at Petersgate Infant School can be seen through:
- Our children are engaged and excited by our music curriculum. The skills that they are taught equip them with a range of skills to enable them to appreciate music throughout their lives
- Our children have become confident performers, composers and listeners, who are able to express themselves musically at school and beyond
- Our children show an appreciation and respect for a range of music from a variety of genres across a variety of generations
- Our children demonstrate and express their enthusiasm for music
- Our children progress throughout the music curriculum which enables them to meet the expectations outlined at the end of each key stage for the national curriculum
