Year 1 Curriculum
In English we will be creating our own space adventures, using descriptive language to describe setting and characters in our stories. We will be also be continuing phase 5 of Letters and Sounds (our phonics programme) focusing on alternative spelling for phonemes. In spelling we will be adding suffixes to root words. You can help your child by reading every evening and learning the weekly spellings!
In Mathematics we will continue to focus on our counting skills forwards and backwards in ones to 50 and then 100. We will begin to count in twos and tens and use this to solve multiplication and division problems. We will be learning about 2d and 3d shapes and using these to create pictures and models linked to our Space topic. We will be finding fractions of shapes, objects and numbers, including halves and quarters. You can help your child at home by counting in ones, twos and tens and reinforce telling the time to o’clock and half past.
In Science we will be starting our new unit ‘Materials’. We will be sorting and comparing objects according to their material and investigating which materials are best suited to different purposes.
In DT we will be creating exciting moving space pictures using mechanisms including sliders and levers.
In History we will be learning about the first moon landing.
In PE we will continue using a brand new planning approach to teaching movement and skills, which is linked to our topic Space. We will be ably supported by our new PE specialist teacher Miss Rachel Teal.
